About the Freelance Rate Calculator
The Freelance Rate Calculator helps independent professionals answer one question: what should I actually charge? Pricing is the single biggest lever on freelance income, yet most freelancers set rates on guesswork or fear of losing the client. We replace the guesswork with a transparent, data-backed benchmark.
Where the numbers come from
Our 2026 rate bands are aggregated from public freelance marketplaces (Upwork, Toptal, Fiverr Pro), salary platforms (Glassdoor, Payscale) and annual freelance industry surveys. Each skill-and-experience combination is stored as a minimum–maximum hourly band in US dollars.
How the calculation works
- Start with the base hourly band for your skill and experience level.
- Apply a country multiplier that reflects local cost of living and demand.
- Convert the hourly band into a day, project or monthly figure.
- Project annual income using your real billable hours per week.
Key assumptions
- 8 billable hours per working day.
- 160 billable hours per month for retainers.
- A standard project equals 10 working days (a two-week sprint).
- Full-time salaried work equals 2,080 hours per year.
- Freelancers charge roughly a 40% premium over salaried pay to cover taxes, benefits and unpaid time off.
A note on accuracy
Every figure is an estimate. Your real rate depends on niche specialization, portfolio strength, client type and negotiation. Use the midpoint as your anchor and the range as your negotiating room — then adjust as you gather your own data.
